Mighty magnets

This term we are inquiring into the use of magnets. Magnets are incredible and we use them quite a lot in everyday situations, sometimes without even knowing it.

To get us started thinking about magnets we used a frame that had a red disc tied to it so it could hang loosely. We wondered if there was a way you could move the red disc without touching the frame or the disc. We had a couple of ideas like perhaps we could blow on the disc and it would move or we could hit the ground really hard next to it, but these ideas didn't work. Roko then asked is it magnetic? You could get a magnet and move it around underneath the disc. This worked brilliantly. Good thinking Roko!

We were then given some different objects from around the classroom and had to work together to decide if we thought the objects were magnetic or non magnetic. We used a magnet and tested each object to see if we were right.

We will be talking about where we find magnets and how we use them so it would be a good idea to have a look around at home and see if you can see where and how you use magnets.
