As we have been learning about electricity we wanted to look at how a torch works. Some of us knew that a torch got power from batteries and that it needed a lightbulb to give light and probably had springs, cables or wires to connect everything together.
We were then given some wires with crocodile clips on each end, one battery and a lightbulb in a holder. We worked with a partner to see if we could make the lightbulb glow. We tried different ways to connect the battery to the light and then some of us discovered how to turn the light on.
We learnt what we had made was called a circuit and that the power travels from the battery through the wires to the lightbulb.
We then talked about how you turn a torch on and off - what would a torch need to be able to do this so you don't waste the battery? A switch!
We continued working with our partner to add a switch to our circuits. Now we can turn the light on and off.
