Skittles observation

Last week Room 6 carried out a science experiment in the S.T.E.M room. We filled small dishes called petri dishes with water. Then we carefully placed 4 different coloured skittles evenly spaced around the outside of the petri dish.

We then predicted (guessed) what would happen.

Fergus thought water in the dish would rise.
Ben thought the colours might disappear.
Lucia said "there would be a rainbow in the dish."
Ferghus thought the skittles would disappear. The colours would wash off and the chocolate might melt.
Lots of children thought they would melt and the colours would mix altogether.

We watched carefully

The colours started to come off the skittles but they did not mix!

This is what we observed:
Charlie said "it is changing colours and making a rainbow."
Lily said "it has gone into four triangles of different colours."
Archie said "the colours are going to mix up."
Everyone noticed the skittles had gone white. They said they had melted.
Next Ben thought it would be interesting to put a skittle in the middle. He thought it would make a circle.

Sylvie said "all the colours are mixed up to make a different colour."
