Floating and sinking

Over the last few weeks Room 6 has been busy in  the STEM room investigating things that float and things that sink. We used  a range of different objects and placed them into the tubs of water. First we predicted what would happen and next we placed the objects into the water. 

Peira found that the ball floated but the glass marble sank.
" It is heavy and the ball has air in it."

Jorga found that the wooden block sank and the polystyrene block floated.

Why are they floating?
One week we had a challenge to make a boat out of silver foil and get it to float and hold some weights.

The next week we had another challenge to make a flinker. We all had so much fun trying to get our flinker to float and almost sink.
