Room 6 have been learning what it means to reduce, reuse and recycle. As part of this we have looked at how paper is recycled and what happens to the paper we put in our school recycling bins.
We wanted to see if we could make some paper ourselves by recycling paper used at school.
First the paper had to be shredded up into small pieces. This was soaked in some warm water overnight.
We scooped up cups of the shredded paper and put it into a blender with some cold water and whizzed it all up.
Once the mixture looked like grey soup we poured the pulp into a container of water.
Then we used a frame with wire mesh on to scoop up some of the pulp. We let the water drip out and then lay it on a towel to dry.
Once it has been drying in the frame for a few minutes we tipped the pulp out onto a piece of baking paper to dry.
It took about a week to dry and now we have decorated them. You can either plant them in your garden as they have seeds on them or you can use them to draw on.

George loved this so much he made me do it at home - we haven't had time to finish the process though - only got up to the pulp stage because I didn't have a frame ready. We have one now so we'll have to finish our paper so he can bring it in to school to show you all. What a fun activity and great to learn how paper can be recycled. Well done room 6.
Gosh you are clever Room 6!!
Have a great holiday.
