Did you know the sun shoots invisible rays at our planet?
These rays are called UV rays and they are what give us sunburn, freckles and wrinkles! Because UV rays are invisible sometimes we don't see how they are hurting us until we are already burnt.
Being sun smart
With our incredibly fine sunny weather we have been having we thought it was important to remind ourselves how we need to be particularly sun smart at this time of year.
We did a little experiment to demonstrate why we should protect our skin. First we were given a bread person to dress using tinfoil to make clothes. We talked about what we thought would happen to the bread person if we put them in the oven. Some of us thought they would burn or toast. Others thought they might melt or shrink. Some thought they would go hard.
Next our bread people were put into the oven for 5 mins. Once they had cooled down we took the bread person's clothes off to look at how they had changed and we saw that they had been toasted and felt hard and dry. We also noticed they were only brown where they hadn't been wearing any clothes.
This reminded us that our skin can be burnt and toasted too if we don't cover up with clothes when we are outside in the hot sun. It also reminded us that sunblock, sunhats and sunglasses were also very important to helping us stay safe in the sun.
Enjoy the summer but remember to stay safe in the sun.
