Through the term we have been doing some
investigating with plants; asking questions, making predictions and observing
experiments. We have done some writing to share our fair testing and other
experiments we have been looking at.
Do
plants need light?
By Hannah
I wanted to find out if a plant could grow
in the dark? First we got a breakable pot and put a plastic cup under it. Next
we put some crumbly dirt in the pot. The dirt had special chemicals in it that
helped the plant grow. We also had another experiment to make it a fair test.
That plant grew right to the top and was in the sun light. I thought the plant
in the dark would grow but it just died. It turned pale white on the stem and
the leaves turned down so we put it away and we are still doing plant
experiments to this day.
Can
you grow an upside down plant?
By Sofia and Olive
We wanted to find out if we planted a seed
upside down would we have a plant upside down. First we found two plastic pots,
then we got two separate seeds, one seed upside down and the other the right
way round. But each day they grew they both grew up not down so if we grew an
upside down seed it would always grow the right way up.
Can
you grow an upside down plant?
By Toitu and Jac
We wanted to find out if a seed could grow
upside down. First we put one seed upside down and another seed right side up,
then we put two on their sides. We thought a plant could grow upside down. The
plant did not grow upside down.
What
liquid help plants grow best?
By Charlotte and Freddy
We wanted to find out if a plant can grow
if it drinks a different liquid. First we put the soil in the pot then we put
the seeds in the pot. When they were done one of the pots was given juice, then
another pot had hot water, then another pot had no liquid and another pot had
cold water. We think the seed in the cold water will grow best. They have not
grown yet but the one with the juice is mouldy.
Does
a seed soaked in food colouring make the plant change colour?
By Cooper, Elsie and Leo
We wanted to find out if a seed soaked in
food colouring grows red roots and a red stem. First we put a seed in food
colouring for twenty-four hours. Then the next day we got two pots and one seed
and dirt. We put a big scoop of dirt in the pots and then we wrote a line on a
pencil and put the seeds on top of the dirt and pushed the seeds down until the
black line was at the top. Then we took the pencil out. We thought that the
seed not soaked in food colouring would grow the best. We think the seed soaked
in food colouring would grow red roots and a red stem. The seed soaked in food
colouring hasn’t grown yet and the one not soaked in food colouring has grown.
How
deep should you plant a seed?
By Orion and Peira
We wanted to find out how deep a seed
should be in the dirt to grow. We put dirt in a pot then we got some seeds and
put them in the pot. One seed was at 2cm and 4cm and 6cm and 8cm and 10cm. We
watered them and we waited and waited and waited. Peira thought the seed at
number 2 could grow the best and Orion thought the seed at number 10 would grow
the best, but actually 2cm grew the best.
Growing
carrot tops
By Jorja and Georgia
We wanted to find out if carrot tops would
grow another carrot. We needed three carrot tops, paper towels and two pots. We
put a carrot top in a pot of soil and two in one with paper towels. We think
the carrot top in soil will grow new seeds. It did not grow straight away. It
has already got leaves now.
Growing
carrot tops
By Finn and Nick
We wanted to find out if the carrot tops
would grow into a new carrot. First we put dirt in a pot with a carrot top and
a carrot top on a paper towel. We watered them and left them. We think it will
grow a new carrot. It didn’t grow a new one but it did grow leaves.
Growing
carrot tops
By Billie and Molly
We wanted to find out if a carrot top would
grow a new carrot. Once Mrs Salisbury brought in some carrot tops. We put one
in dirt and 2 onto paper towels. We watered them and left them. We think it
will grow into a carrot. No it didn’t grow a carrot, but it did grow leaves.
