Bread faces

Our inquiry unit this term is Safe in My World where we are looking at how we can be safe in the sun, around dogs and on the road.
We have been thinking about how we can be safe in the sun and what things we might need to be safe in the sun.
We came up with some great ideas: staying in the shade, wearing sunhats, sunglasses, sunblock and clothes that cover us up.
We then made some bread faces to help us see why we need to be safe in the sun. First we cut out a face shape and we made little tin foil hats for the faces. Mrs Salisbury then toasted the bread for us while we thought about what would happen to our bread faces. Some of us thought the tin foil hat would stop the bread from toasting and it would still be nice and soft under the hat. Some of us thought the bread would still toast all over.
Once toasted we took the hats off and looked to see if our thoughts were right. We discovered that the bread was protected under the hat and only the uncovered part of the bread was toasted.
We talked about how the bread was like our skin and the toaster is like the sun and some of us decided that wearing a sun hat was probably a really good idea so our skin will be looked after too.

We then enjoyed adding tomatoes and cheese or honey and banana to our toasted faces. Learning can be tasty too!
